"You can do anything if you can wake in your dreams" (Guggenheim Grotto) Every time I listen to Mark's video, tears flow from my eyes and I'm finally able to put words around it. Those who know me know how important music is to my life. Music fascinates me with its ability to transcend time, all boundaries and touch different people in different ways no matter whom or where they are. Mark chose these words from Guggenheim Grotto for his own reasons. I just want to share what they mean to me.

On behalf of all parents who love their children, I wish to share my story. In December 2010, Mark was undergoing many tests, surgery and finally received the definitive cancer diagnose. Receiving that phone call from Mark's doctor was to me, the second most horrible phone call any mother could receive. Every night during that very difficult month, as hard as it was, I would finally fall asleep out of exhaustion. Then I would awake to face another day. As many of us do with the dawn of a new day, our eyes open to what normally would be a fresh, positive outlook and an anticipation of what the day will bring. But for me, every December morning as I awoke, brought the realization that no, that wasn't just a bad dream, my son, my youngest, my baby has cancer.

Every new day challenged me to find new strength. The surgeries, chemotherapy, constant medical tests and procedures filled the months to come. Yet, every day, I saw a young man who showed more strength than I could ever imagine. I saw wonderful, beautiful people who surrounded him with more love, care, prayers and support than I could ever imagine. Then, I saw this same young man awake and emerge from his bad dream in a way I could never imagine. Mark is now taking his own cancer fight to the streets through The Cancer Fight organization. I am so proud and humbled at what Mark and his wonderful friends can and will do to reach, help and support cancer fighters everywhere. Yes, "you can do anything if you can wake in your dreams".

Mark,

I just finished reading all of your blogs. You're an inspiration.
In response to your essay...remind yourself everyday of the things in life that make you feel alive.
The first snowfall in Wisconsin...the ocean...skyscrapers representing man's ability...the smell of the person that you love...
You fight now and everyday in the future because life is truly beautiful. You will continue to get through anything because you know this now more than ever.
Keep up the cancer fight and know this Liederbach family sends love and support.

Your inspirational, detailed, complex story is a wonderful testimony to your strength with words, power of your soul, and hope of a young man for all who read your message. To continue your courageous battle is the most important job for you now. Your words are a source of strength and admiration for me. Thank you for your time to compile these words.

I recently had the privilege of writing an article on the GreendalePatch website describing Mark's cancer journey. One statement in the story, however, is inaccurate and has understandably caused the Liederbach family embarrassment and concern.
I had written, wrongly, that "a portion of future ticket fees (of the high school theatre department) now goes toward offsetting the cost of treatment."
That sentence is simply not true. I'd like to share a portion of a letter I received from Mark's mother, Carol, that will hopefully help explain the real facts that should have been in the original story to begin with:
Carol: What Mr. Christensen conveyed to Mark is that this year's cast has chosen to collect a contribution among the cast to donate to the charities identified on Mark's blog. Here is quote directly from the email Mr. Christensen wrote to the parents of cast members on which we were copied. "Thanks to Wil Raasch & Sean Marus, students today asked the cast of "The Pajama Game" to contribute a little extra, over & above the regular $30 student contribution, to be donated to Mark Liederbach for distribution to a charity of his choice." Mark and I viewed the charity contribution as a positive and wonderful gesture of support.
So, as the author of the story, I apologize to the Liederbach family. Absolutely none of these funds raised will be directed to Mark's medical expenses as I incorrectly stated.
Rather, the funds will go to charities. And the Liederbach family wants it made clear that they are neither seeking nor accepting any financial donations towards Mark's medical expenses. In no way does the Liederbach family want to take away from the funds and finances of the GHS theatre program.
I'm sorry for the unwanted and undeserved embarrassment and scrutiny I've caused the Liederbachs. I hope this helps clear up the confusion and misinformation that I was 100% responsible for. And I wish them nothing but the best in the coming weeks as Mark, an impressive young man, continues his cancer recovery.
GreendalePatch recently issued a brief, but I believe inadequate, retraction.

Mark K. Liederbach, you are truly the strongest person I know. A lot has gone wrong in my life (from my perspective) and I cursed it all, but I have never had to deal with something so real and threatening as what you are going through. Your documentation has made me realize something: The world we know may be a dim place, but people like you make it brighter. Your strength and positive attitude have left me in shock and awe at how strong a single person can be. You are the definition of an inspiration and I know that with the attributes and characteristics you possess, you will come out of this being a stronger and more positive person that everyone can look up to. I already do. I love you Mark, and I know that you will show cancer just how strong you are.
